The Chester County Peace Movement on Saturday, September 21st commemorated International Day of Peace. Peace Day was established in 1981 by the United Nations as an annual observance of global non-violence and ceasefire. In 2002, the General Assembly of the UN declared September 21 as the permanent date for International Day of Peace.
2019 Peace Day Theme: Sustainable Goal #13 / Climate Action
United Nations Sustainable Goals include: poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, environment, and social justice.
• Environment directly affects health status and plays a major role in quality of life, especially for children in poverty.
• The World Bank expects global warming to push 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030.
• In the last two decades, floods have hit 2.3 billion people.
• Droughts have affected more than 1 billion people.
• There will be more wars due to lack of basic resources such as clean drinking water.
• No part of the world is immune.
U.S. cost of war since 2001: $5.9 TRILLION
“Put people over the Pentagon,” & end this endless war!
Redirecting $200 billion from the military each year would free up $2 trillion or more over the next decade for big, bold, and urgent people-first priorities like Medicare for All and a Green New Deal against climate change.
